To borrow a phrase from our Editor Frank
Dreier, "here is the part that nobody reads"-although
I hope that you do! The basic membership rates in the
Fortean Research Center have been increased to $20
for U.S. members and $25 for Canadian & overseas
members. This is the first increase since 1982. In case
you're curious about your membership status, you'll
notice a number on your mailing label that corresponds
with the issue of the Journal of the Fortean Research
Center that your membership expires with. For exam-
ple, our Journal-in-progress is "5/3" and this is the last
Journal you'd receive under your present membership.
Anyone with "5/2" will not receive the next Journal
(5/3), nor will they receive the next newsletter unless a
check or money order is sent to us for the appropriate
amount. So hey!...re-up today, OK?
by Scott Colborn
Are there a few of you that will consider a more
sizable level of financial support? I believe that there
are. The $20 basic membership for U.S. members is
just that...basic. Your $20 will just about cover the
production of the Journal and newsletter as well as the
mailing costs. Many of you can afford membership
levels of $50, $100, or even $500. As we are a tax-
exempt organization, you may wish to include a dona-
tion to us in your tax planning. Please consider a
higher level of financial support so that we can con-
tinue to bring to you quality publications, quality
conferences, and quality speakers on the unexplained.

Things To Look For
Satellites can be seen from the Earth, and many
times these are confused with UFOs, especially if they
have some peculiar qualities. With over 6,000 pieces
of space hardware in orbit, it's actually quite common
to see 10-15 per night. Not all 6,000 are operating.
Some are derelict, abandoned, or even spent rocket
stages. Occasionally you'll see one that is tumbling
and as it does, it gives off flashes of light.
Satellites appear like a star that is moving. You

From The Director
Welcome to the premier edition of what we hope will be a
monthly newsletter sent to the members of the Fortean Research
Center. Tom Keith, Director of Investigations for the Center, and
Dale Bacon, editor emeritus of the Journal, along with assistance
from Frank Dreier, editor of the Journal, have a project here in the
form of a newsletter that I think will be of great interest to you,
the
members of our Center. The intention behind this publication is
that it will serve as a timely connection between the activities of
the Fortean Research Center and its membership, in the following
ways.
In this and future issues, we'll be announcing upcoming
events of both local and regional interest. In addition, the news-
letter will serve as a forum for an exchange of ideas, theories and
hypotheses regarding Fortean phenomena, as well as a vehicle to
keep our membership abreast of the investigations being con-
ducted and cases worked on by our members. In this regard you

informative, and just maybe a little controversial. Controversy
allows for an exchange of ideas and a give-and-take that I believe
is inherent in the process of finding the truth. So join in the fun
and send us your comments and newsclippings for future issues.
Keep it short, concise and to the point. If you "wax poctic" in
greater length than the newsletter will allow, you might see your
comments in the next Journal. And take a moment and tell a
friend about our Center-because membership benefits just got
even better.
Members will now receive a Journal published about ever
3-4 months that has gotten many great reviews from our peers,
and a monthly newsletter. By the way, if you renew your sub-
scription immediately and send us $15, you'll receive both
publications for the length of your membership (4 Journals and
approximately 12 newsletters...around one year. Do it right

Quarterly Pot Luck Dinner
Fire up those nuclear accelerator packs and brush off your
ghost busting shoes. We're having our quarterly pot-luck dinner
on Saturday, June 13th and this time the entertainment is a Tour of
the Ghosts of Lincoln, hosted by Dale Bacon.
This bus tour is approximately 90-120 minutes in length
and visits many of the famous and not-so famous haunts in the
capital city. It will begin and end at the Antelope Park shelter,
followed by one of the increasingly popular meals provided by
members and friends of the center.
As it currently stands there will be one tour, but based on
the recent response to the meetings a second bus may be called
into play. In addition to the tour and meal there will be fine con-
versation and maybe even a surprise or two. Watch your mail for
more information about this exciting event.
New Monthly Coffee Format
The Fortean Research Center monthly coffee is held 2
pm-4 pm the first Sunday of each month at The Way Home Music
and Books, 3231 So. 13th, in Lincoln. In the past the entire
meeting has consisted of open discussion about any and all sub-
jects, but beginning with the June 7 coffee there will be a change
in format.
The highlight of each coffee will be a program on a speci-
fic topic, such as UFO experiences, UFO sightings, abductions,
cattle mutilations, ghost reports, psychic experiences, interpreting
On The Air
One of the outlets utilized by the Fortcan Research Center
for the dissemination of information is through the public air
waves. Lincoln, Nebraska is home to one of the few remaining
public access radio stations left in the country today. it has
enjoyed over 15 years of service to the area combining specialized
music and eclectic programming. Exploring Unexplained
Phenomena has aired every Saturday morning since 1984. Each
week this call-in talk show has featured researchers, investigators
dreams, etc. The programs will be presented by Fortean Research
Center members or invited guests. Part of the coffee will be
devoted to announcements of scheduled investigation classes, pot
luck dinners, up-coming workshops, seminars, conferences and
other Fortean Research Center activities. There will also be the
traditional open discussion period.
The June 7 program will focus on Nebraska cattle mutila-
tions and will be presented by Tom Keith. Non-members are
welcome to attend, and everyone is encouraged to bring a friend.

and updates involving the realm of the unexplained.
As an ongoing feature in this newsletter I will be giving all-
too-brief summaries of our guests and the topics discussed for the
preceding four week period.
April 25th was an all update show spurred on by questions
concerning the conference speakers by listeners. On the update
shows the sky is the only limit for subject matter. Often UFO's
are discussed, but invariably ghosts, big foot, and various

anomalies are covered.
May 2nd was an exception to the normal broadcast. That
was the weekend of the conference and both Scott and I were in
attendance. One of the production assistants took over for us
making announcements about the conference speakers and the
various topics they would be discussing.
May 9th brought back to us the UFO crash and retrieval
reporter Leonard Stringfield from Cincinnati, Ohio. Stringfield
has been with us on previous occasions and still proved to be
fascinating. Leonard's work into the McGuire/Ft. Dix alleged

not a star at all. This is Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar
system. For you constellation buffs, it is positioned just below
Leo, the Lion. High overhead you'll see the Big Dipper pointing
to the North Star.
This the time of year when the Milky Way is beginning to

Recent Investigations
Fortcan Rescarch Center investigators were kept busy
during the past few months with several cases of unusual occur-
rences. Those cases included a report of ghost activity in a home
in northwest Lincoln, in an apartment in south-central Lincoln, in
a home in Seward County, and in a home in a second location in
Seward County. There was a UFO sighting in northwest Lincoln,
a UFO alien-contact report in a home in a small town in Butler
County, and an alien-sighting report in northwest Lincom. There
was also a creature sighting in west-central Lincoln.
The Fortcan Research Center also received additional in-
formation pertaining to on-going experiences stemming from
previously reported UFO sightings and contacts in Lincoln,
Omaha and Las Vegas, Nevada, and involving a UFO sighting
and cattle mutilation in Valley County.
Members who are doing investigations are encouraged to
send copies of their reports in for compilation. Report forms arc
available from Tom Keith, Box 30036, Lincoln, NE., 68503.

Let me guess...you've just finished mowing the lawn and
are now relaxing in your favorite chair reading this newsletter. Or
perhaps you're at a ball game reading this while waiting for your
son or daughter to take their turn at bat. Summer can be a busy yet
interesting time for us all.
I've just returned from the Mutual UFO Network Interna-
tional Symposium that took place in July in Albuquerque, New
Mexico. After the conference, my wife Kathryn and I went to a
town approximately 40 miles north of Carlsbad Caverns-a fairly
small town by the name of Artesia. Our travels took us to Artesia
because of what a Lincoln, Nebraska woman under regressive
hypnosis told a clinical psychologist and myself.
The woman, who has had UFO/paranormal experiences
since childhood, said that as an adult she had been abducted and
taken to an underground facility with a water source or a river
nearby (she could hear what she described as water next to or ove
cribed as being hot and arid with slightly

altered. The "letter" piqued my interest all the more, because very
few people knew of my interest in a place by the name of Artesia.
Then something else happened that got my attention in a big way!
I decided to tell no one except the abductee and the psy-
chologist about receiving the "letter." In going through my files,
I remembered hearing about Bill Hamilton's interest in alleged
stories of underground facilities, so I called Bill. He was very
cordial and I invited him to be a guest on Exploring Unexplained
Phenomena. The following Saturday as we were about 34
minutes into the one hour program, I asked Bill to tell us about the
alleged alien presence on planet Earth and abut the possibility of
alien underground bases. Right at that precise second, the trans-
mitter for the radio station went off the air! The engineer got it
back on by manually restarting it, and could find no immediate
cause as to why it had gone off-air.
A friend of mine has told me that "there are no coinci-

rolling terrain and some greenery that followed the river. She
gave the name of Artesia as being associated with the facility, and
said it was a joint operation with both "alien beings" and humans
wearing white coveralls. At one point during her experience at
the facility she was in a room interacting with children that looked
like they were possibly alien and human parents. But wait folks,
it gets stranger yet.
I narrowed the possible towns with the name of Artesia
down to several, with Artesia, New Mexico being the closest in
my judgement to the description offered by the abductec. Shortly
after I had begun researching various citics by the name of Artesia
around the country, I received an anonymous letter in the mail. In
so many words, it stated that I should cease and desist in my
cfforts to learn more about Artesia, and that the woman's in-
volvement was unfortunate, but the course of events couldn't be
happening that was pointing me towards Artesia. Thus my inter-
cst in combining my trip to the MUFON conference in
Albuquerque with a short side trip to Artesia, New Mexico.
In Artesia I met with the news editor for the paper, and
explained my interest in learning about any unusual reports from
the area. She took my picture and wrote a short, concise article
inviting the readers to contact me with any information. I also
met with several individuals associated with the police depart-
ment and asked them to contact me with any reports of UFO
activity, cattle mutilations, disappearances of people, pets or
livestock, clc.
You'll read all about this case in a future Journal. At the
very least, should someone ask me what I did on my summer
vacation, I've got a fairly good story for them! I hope you have an
interesting summer as well.

have done over 1991-92. We once again heard the interrupted
broadcast of William Hamilton as he was about to discuss
underground UFO bases. Our interview with the famous, or
infamous, Bill Cooper. The near-death experience with a disti-
nguished panel of experts who had been there. The Billy Meier
UFO case, as discussed by Brett Elders. These, combined with
the others, rounded out the month nicely.
We're always looking for new and interesting guests. If
you're involved in research or have had an experience, and would
be willing to talk about it over the airwaves, please contact us.
by Tom Keith
There were three possible UFO sightings reported to the Fortean
Research Center during July. One sighting occurred near Normal
and South Streets in southeast Lincoln in August, 1990; one
occurred near Yankee Hill Lake, about five miles west of Lincoln
July 16, 1992; and the third sighting occurred near 14th and
Highway 2 in south Lincoln July 24th, 1992.

Ten Ways You Can Help The UFO Cover-Up
Continue, Part Two
6) Attempt to keep any and all discussion of the UFO subject
out of the public and private schools.
Remember that before we adults can "mold their little minds" (I
heard this exact phrase years ago from an adoring father of two
children) kids can be free-thinkers, and that's dangerous. Try to
impress on your children and the children of others at the very
earliest age possible that they should always believe everything
that our government and military tells 'em. Always conform,
don't rock the boat and never ask silly questions. And never ask
silly questions that might reflect on the parent and the lack of
"proper values" that didn't get instilled at an early age. Point out
to the kids that after all, if there was anything to this UFO busi-
ness, the
would have been all over this stuff a long time ago.
press
Anyone knows the government can't keep a secret, so we can't be
expected to believe for one minute that factions within our elected
or appointed government have little green men or are keeping the
biggest secret in the history of this planet. Come on now! Take as
your litany the phrase being made popular by a best-selling
manufacturer of beer: "Why ask why?" There's nothing to get all
steamed about...trust me. (Last call, drink up folks)
up
7) Ridicule anything you read in the press, or any comments
favorable to the study of the UFO subject by broadcast media.
Let 'em know that there are more important issues facing us. Any
issue will do. Take as an example the ABC Nightline program in
1983 that was going to feature an interview with the late Dr. J.
Allen Hynek on UFOs. Thank goodness at the last possible
minute someone in authority at ABC made the right decision
(remember War of the Worlds?). With Dr. Hynek seated in the
ABC affiliate in Omaha, NE, Nightline switched the show's focus
to another subject far more important than the UFO subject (thus
averting the potential UFO riots-in-the-streets scenario). Of
it was the Greyhound Bus strike. So don't give the UFO
course,
by Scott Colborn
crazies an inch of favorable coverage. If ever in doubt, remember
the "party line." (By Jove, I think you've got it.)
8) Convince witnesses that there is just a little problem with
their internal hard-wiring in their brains.
Let's say that you know someone who purports to have had a
"close encounter" experience (estimates are now of possibly one
in fifty having had some sort of crazy wacko UFO experience). A
little medication, a little therapy to resolve angst over father-
mother stuff and they'll be in good shape in no time, and more
importantly they won't be talking about UFOS. (With the appro-
priate amounts of medication, they won't be walking, talking or
doing much of anything.) Furthermore, there are always mun-
dane explanations for someone's half-baked memories of UFO
contact, or worse yet, contact with occupants of UFOs. Never
mind that the mundane explanations are sometimes far stranger
and much more twisted than alien contact. Just look 'em right in
the eye and say "Come on now, you don't expect me to believe
that garbage, do you? Let 'em know that no one in their right
mind will listen to their tall tales. Certainly not you!
9) If this UFO stuff still bugs you after all the above, here's a
simple cure: get religion.
Not just any old religion. You've got to get one that will make
you feel bad about your UFO experiences. You've got to feel bad
so you can feel good. This UFO stuff-it's the devil's business,
and if you just change your ways and become a god-fearing per-
son (put you tithe right here), the poor devil will just leave you
alone. So you've got to get a religion that discourages thinking
about the UFO question, and encourages you to view any subject
that is not fully understood as suspicious and to be fearful of.
Never mind all the references in the Christian Bible to events that
bear a marked similarity to UFO accounts, to ground traces and to
spectacular lights seen in the skies. Or, for that matter, to many
other sacred texts that mention accounts involving what we might
possibly call UFOs: that is, of course, if we believed in UFOs.

10) With all this said, if you yourself ever have a one of those
way-out, wild UFO experiences, just call up one of your bud-
dies in CSICOP & they'll set you right.
They'll tell you what you didn't see and assure you that it's a
normal reaction brought about by too little sleep, too much coffee
and an over-active imagination. Or something like this, but pro-
bably even better. I hear tell that the same flocks of geese that
confused "veteran" UFO researchers with spectacular geese
overflights for years have flown indoors and are being seen in
bedrooms all across America, so just disregard those "visitor" tall
tales. They're probably silly Mother Goose stories. So if you
have any problems after your imaginary experience, a little
therapy or perhaps a serious alcohol or drug addiction and you
won't even think about weird memories. At least you won't think
about them a lot. And never mind those silly repetitious dreams
about imaginary encounters with the little grey guys. Just keep

Exploring Unexplained Phenomena V Update
Two new guests have been added to our line-up.
Raymond Boeche, founder of the Fortean Research Center and
well-known for his investigation of the RAF Bentwaters Incident

Director of Abduction Research will speak on the relevance of
multiple participant abductions to research at our banquet, and
moderate a close encounters panel with experiencers from the
southeast Nebraska area. (Friday evening, opposite the ghost tour)

up at least a couple of subjects you've somehow remained una-
ware of, and as usual, some that you wish you could somehow
remain unaware of.
Rosemary Ellen Guiley, author of Vampires Among Us,
opened by spelling out some of the differences between tradi-
tional vampire legend and media portrayals. Antonio Huneeus's
"UFO Chronicles" was a nicely eclectic slideshow covering the

[PAGE BREAK]

current UFO scene; he's written the "Science Frontiers" column
for the New York City Tribune. John Keel gave an overview of
pivotal years in history in "Portents & Fortents." John Michell's
talk was based on his The Twelve-Tribe Nations and the Science
of Enchanting the Landscape, and included unpublished material
on the locating of central ceremonial sites for various regions.
The highpoint of the afternoon was Doug Skinner's illus-
trated overview of "The Richard Shaver Mysteries." In the
1930's Shaver came forth with a number of tales-some of which
he thought were true, some written as fiction-about lost civili-
zations, mutant mind controllers manipulating the human race,
and underground cities to which he'd been shown. Only those
most devotedly on the fringe would today take his stories at face
value, but they're problematical in their similarities to later UFO
phenomena, and for the large number of people who also felt
they'd been taken to the caves of the Dero.
My Dinner With Aztecs
The banquet featured and enormously well produced pre-
sentation, Age of Gods, Heroes, and Man: a Multi-media
Portrayal of Pre-Columbian Cultures by composer David Iron-
side and photographer Jeff Young. Using a soundtrack of
traditional Mexican instruments and original photos of sites in the
Yucatan, it evoked the concretization of the Quetzalcoatl myths
from the spiritualism of the Maya through the Toltecs to the
"literalism and power" of the Aztec. A bank of computer con-
trolled projectors worked together to seamlessly fade and dissolve
between slides in a virtually cinematic presentation, at times
overlapping in half-seen or implied images gods and spirits. A
beautiful and impressive production.
Doug Skinner is a talented ventriloquist-a term I seldom
use-and appeared on Martin Mull's Talent Takes a Holiday.
On previous occasions, he and little Eddie Gray have presented
sketches on unscrupulous crop circle and abduction investigators,
this year giving a short but very funny demonstration of a very,
very bad way to read the Tarot.
Finally, there was a panel on crop circles moderated by
widely published Fortean Michael Shoemaker. On the panel were
Rosemary Ellen Guiley (Center for N. Am. Crop Circle Study),
Gerald S. Hawkins (Stonehenge Decoded), Ray Manners (INFO
president), John Michel (Cerealogist editor), and Andrew
Rothovius (NEARA).
Shoemaker made two interesting points concerning the
circles validity. First of all, they're the only Fortean phenomena
he knows of that have no historical precedent (unless you include
haunted computers), and paradoxically, the fact that the evidence
is so concrete in comparison with other Fortean phenomena raises
suspicion. Manners suggested that the circles might be done by
competing art students. Guiley asked where the half finished
circles were, as somewhere along the line some hoaxter should
have been interrupted.
An audience member whose father was an onion farmer
made two interesting points: there are rollers available that could
flatten grain without damaging the seed heads, and that round
patches caused by fungus do appear overnight...neither of which
answers the objections to either of these explanations. However,
it does show how arguments used by proponents can be overly
simplistic, and how skeptics comments can be helpful in im-
proving them, even when the alternative explanations seem
hopelessly flawed. Also, after the constant defending of the
phenomena against silly arguments on television and the news-
papers, it's actually very pleasant to listen to intelligent skeptics
who don't feel obligated to behave badly, even if one doesn't
agree with them.
Breakfast Of Forteans
The Sunday morning breakfast seminar started with
Michael Shoemakers "The Fortean Traveler", a slide projected
guide to Fortean sightseeing, mostly in the eastern U.S. and
Canada, concentrating on geological and archeological sights.
Ken Moak took a look at the theoretical considerations involved
with the idea of biological UFOs in "Charles Fort's Sky Critters."
William Corliss of the Sourcebook Project spoke on some
of the "559 Terrestrial Anomalies" he's gathered over more than
years of combing scientific journals, and published in his
catalogs of geophysical and geological anomalies. These range
from marine phosphorescent wheels, to unusual inclusions in
rocks, to gelatinous meteors.

The Shadow Over Fredericksburg
Each year they present a different ghost tour, sometimes
ranging quite far afield from the Washington D.C. area, this year
to Fredericksburg. Richard Leshuk hosted the tour and did an
admirable job filling people in on the background, and keeping
them from filing into it and missing the bus. Further insight on
ghosts and photography was provided by Dale Kaczmarek of the
Ghost Research Society, and psychic and private detective
Ginette Matacia gave her impressions of the sites. If you don't
already bring a psychic along when sightseeing, I heartily
recommend you do.
In his introduction to The Ghosts of Fredericksburg L.B.
Taylor Jr. stated that, arguably, Fredericksburg is America's most
historic city, and that it may also be our most haunted city of its
size. While I've been to places that felt older or more atmospheric
(Harper's Ferry, for example), there was some hard to pin down
feeling about the town (more aesthetic than psychic) that fit it to
the role. I thought it was just me, or the winter light, or the Civil
War TV series. However, another member of the tour group was
impressed by how much it really did feel like a town out of an
H.P. Lovecraft story, which in afterthought seemed to be pretty
much my impressions.
I'd like to make it clear to the good people of Fredericks-
burg (and any black magicians on the chamber of commerce) that
I'm not suggesting this is in fact the case...just that a superficial
visit to it by an editor of questionable taste left the impression it
might be. As the odds are rather against this, don't let me deter
you from visiting, as it's a worthwhile place to visit whether or
not you're interested in the ghosts.
Congratulations are due to FortFest Chair Phyllis Benja-
min and the others who put this and the last few events together.
I should also mention the excellent book sale put together by
Michael Shoemaker, always a major attraction for attendees.
INFO will present FortNite, a one day event on May 1st.

Sweetman, a leading authority on Stealth, coauthored a

ponsible for the "bone-shaking" noises heard nearby. Reports of
high altitude, brightly glowing objects may be attributable to the
diamond-shaped "Pumpkin Seed," which may use external com-

How Engineers Lose Touch by Eugene S. Fergusun
Though not Fortean in the usual sense, this article strikes
me as being in line with some of Fort's commentaries on seem-
ingly scientific approaches to problems. The author feels that
engineering education has shifted too far towards analytical
approaches, and that students no longer gain an understanding of
Upcoming Events
how things work under real conditions, the limits of stress in ma-
terials, and how people use and respond to systems. He points out
that "nearly all engineering failures result from faulty judgments
rather than faulty calculations." and that "Successful design still
requires expert tacit knowledge and intuitive 'feel' based on ex-
perience..." and an ability to visualize realistic conditions. He
also comments on the use of computer programs, which break
problems down into an approximation of reality, based on a set of
assumptions made by the programmer that the user may not be
aware of, and the programmers themselves may have limited ex-
perience. He also addresses the problems of "top-down design",
and of designers becoming to self contained and cutting themsel-
ves off from relevant knowledge from other fields.

Newsletter Expansion
Due to the many kind comments we have received, this
newsletter is expanding its size. The purpose of the newsletter is
to keep members informed on activities and topics of concern to
Fortean Research Center members. The larger format will allow
us to include descriptions of cases, articles by members, a calen-
dar of events, and other interesting features.
This is an opportunity to share your views, ideas and ex-
periences with other FRC members. The newsletter will be as
interesting and exciting as the members make it with their con-

Ouija Boards
Ouilja (we je, -je) n. Trademark. A board with letters and num-
bers printed on its surface used for spelling out messages by psy-
chic forces, often believed to be spirits of the dead, through
movement of a pointer or planchette. [American English,
supposedly <French oui + German ja]
The Ouija Board is not a new "game", its use was common
even in Victorian times. Through the ages it has been used in a
number of ways, including as a fortune-telling devise, as a tool for
communicating with the dead, and, most recently, as an
entertaining party game.
There are many theories as to what causes movement of the
planchette across the board. Some people believe the participants
touching the pointer direct the movement, either consciously or
subconsciously. Others think spirits from beyond are able to
communicate with the living by this method and some believe
that demons and evil spirits use the Ouija Board as a doorway to

this dimension and view the curiosity of the participants who
experiment with the board as an invitation to torment or possess
them.
Many people report having negative experiences as a result
of "fooling around" with an Ouija Board. One man said, "I was
messing around with an Ouija Board one night when a strange
feeling came over me and I suddenly realized I was floating near
the ceiling looking down at my own body. It scared the hell out of
me and I've stayed away from them (Ouija Boards) ever since."
Through the large number of ghost experience cases Linda
and I have investigated through the years we have learned that it is
common that the person reporting an ghost experience, or
someone in the family, had been using an Ouija Board. Some
people believe they have even brought evil into their lives by
using the board. The ghost reports we have investigated in which
an Ouija Board played a part have generally been those that were
the most frightening and threatening to those involved.

[PAGE BREAK]

For instance, Dale Bacon, Linda and I investigated a case
last spring in which a 15-year-old girl and her 6-year-old brother
were terrified by spirits that had entered their home after the girl
and a couple of her friends had tried to conduct a seance using an
Ouija Board. The spirits stayed with the family for some time and
frightened the kids so badly they didn't want to go near the house.
Their mother also saw figures several times and was even touched
by them on different occasions, though no one actually suffered
any physical harm.
Had the Ouija Board played a part in the arrival of the
spirits? There is no way to tell for sure.
Obviously, not every one who experiments with an Ouija
Board has a negative experience, but it's use is common thread
that runs through many of our ghost experience investigations. Is
it just a matter of mathematical probability (out of every so many
people, a certain number will have a bad experience)? Is it that
some people are more vulnerable to dangerous spirits? Are Ouija
Boards and ghost experiences connected at all? I don't know the
answers to those questions, but we hear about Ouija Board in-
volvement often enough during our investigations that we are
suspicious that a connection might actually exist.
If you have had paranormal experiences after using an
Ouija Board the FRC would like to hear about them. Phone me at
[AD] (402) 489-3403, or write me at Box 30036, Lincoln, NE, 68503.
Looking At Shamanism pt. 1
If you, as a reader, keep up on current trends in the world of
metaphysics, you are aware of the latest national fad referred to as
the shamanic experience.
Whenever something like this comes along I look into it to
see what it is all about. I guess I am one of those who follow fads.
As a case in point, a few years back I was reading all I could about
crystals and their esoteric properties. Before that all the rage was
in the trance-channel. You remember Lazaris and Ramtha, don't
you? The stories and tales about dolphins and Atlantis were about
as incredible as the prices they charged to hear them.
It has always been that new fads will come around every
few years, with the really big ones happening about every twenty.
Spiritualism was the thing just after the turn of the century.
Mediums were conducting seances as late as the death of Harry
Houdini in 1929. The forties showed a rise in the Christian faith,
partly due to the global conflict of the era. The 1960's dawned the
Aquarius, with just a side order of cult followings.
We managed to survive disco and urban cowboys, kung-fu
movies and Rambo. The last twenty years have spawned literally
hundreds of overnight sensations. The eighties heralded the New
Age, of which nothing was new. In fact, the newer the fad, the
older the tradition it came from. The next twenty-year cycle will
put us into the turn of the millennium. I'm curious what rage will
go with it? The way our nation has been exposed to the "Save the
Planet" programming, I tend to think that the shamans might be a
part of it. Earth religions are more visible and the emphasis on
American Indian culture is at an all time high. Unfortunately the
culture being studied was wiped out some two-hundred years ago.
I suppose the old adage of better late than never is applicable here.
I do hope that it is not too late, however.
So then, what is a shaman and how does this character fit
into all of this? To be totally honest, I don't know if I can actually
tell you. The best way for me to proceed here is with a story.
When I was a kid growing up in a rural Iowa community sur-
rounded by farmland beyond that more farms, I loved playing
cowboys and Indians. Before I discovered monster movies I lived
on westerns. John Wayne, Clint Eastwood and Lee Van Cleef
were more than just figures on the big screen. They were heroes
to me. There were two kinds of people they fought, bad cowboys
and Indians. I admit that the celluloid is not the best comparison
to make to life, but the alternative I had was to experience the
Indian first hand. This took place in Tama, Iowa, for me. That
experience proved fatalistic for me in that my uncles would go
drinking with members of the Mesquake Indians from the res.
Racial tension between the reds and whites got so bad that the
by Dale Bacon
main street separating the towns of Tama and its white counter-
part, Toledo, would become a no-man's land. The old men and
farmers of the area would always talk negatively about the "lazy
Indian" and any other minority which happened to exist. Need-
less to say, I was somewhat conditioned to a certain image of
these people.
As is so often the case, my thinking changed over time.
The more I worked with and studied the history of the plains In-
dians, the more I grew to respect their cultures and traditions.
Because of this I was more than just a little interested in the sha-
manic movement when it came in vogue.
I don't remember where I first heard the word shaman.
Maybe I read it in a book somewhere, because it was never used
in the movies. When you heard about the doctors and healers in
the tribe they were called medicine men. In fact, you had to go all-
the way to the country of Siberia to hear this term used. Until
recently, the only person who would use such a term was an
anthropologist. These are the people who actually introduced the
word into our society. Men and women like Carlos Castenada,
Michael Harner and Margaret Mead were influential in the deve-
lopment of interest. Mircea Eliade wrote an excellent text on the
subject back in the 1930's, but few people read it until the eight-
ies. The book is boring, but the information is complete and
painstakingly researched. After all, he was an anthropologist, not
a novelist.
The death of Joseph Campbell was the impetus needed to
kick the fad into high gear. Once he was gone, people began to
listen to what he had been saying for the past fifty or so years
about mythology and he history of mankind. A connection was
established between the shaman and healing. The healing was
always done with ritual and natural medicines. It was a perfect
fad for the environmentally aware baby-boomers of this age. The
one thing which was special about the shaman was that he or she
could perform the art of what is called "journeying." What this
consists of is inducing an altered state of consciousness (or Sha-
manic State of Consciousness, according to Michael Harner) and
then "journey" into either the underworld or overworld. During
this trip the shaman undergoes many adventures, such as
encountering mythical creatures, animal guides or being torn
apart by unseen forces, only to be rebom as a new person. In the
old countries, and many new countries, this state was attained by
the use of certain sacred drugs or by the steady rhythmic drone of
a drum beaten for hours. Other ways this state is induced is
through dancing, twirling, sleep deprivation and chanting, howe-
ver drumming is currently the preferred choice in our fashion-

scious society.
The American Indian, or Native American, for you politi-
cally correct critics, was the society chosen by the up and coming
shamans as the role-model people. Primary interest was placed
on the Lakhota people because when most people think of In-
dians, they think of Lakhota. They are also called the Sioux. The
culture admired, however, as I stated earlier, was destroyed by the
advancing conquest of the west from 1629 to 1890. There had
been a movement to actually eliminate these heathens from the
planet prior to the turn of the last century. Some of us can still
recall reading the history books where phrases like, "The only
good Indian is a dead Indian" existed. It wasn't until the 1960's
that Indians were even treated as human beings by the central
government, and that is still being disputed. When a society tries
everything it can to destroy a people, it is little wonder that tradi-
tionalists are so upset about the influx of shaman Wannabes (as
in, "I wannabe a medicine man.") to the reservations. The Wan-
nabe will pay a lot of money to learn the pipe ceremony (which
had been illegal until the 1960's), the vision quest and sweat
ceremonies. Then, of course, there are those opportunists who
would gladly take the money and send the pilgrim home, a real-
live medicine man, or shaman, or whatever they wanted to call

We Need Your Help!
One of the main focuses of the Fortean Research Center is
to collect information from people about their experiences with
all types of unexplained phenomena. It's a safe bet that every one
of our members has had, or has knowledge of, an experience of
this type and we'd like to hear about them. We are interested in all
type of paranormal experiences, including ghost experiences,
themselves. A life long practice, learned during an extended
three-day weekend on the res. now they could teach others. They
could conduct their own sweat lodge ceremonies and have a
vision quest any weekend that would fit into their schedule. They
could give workshops and charge extravagant prices for atten-
dance. People will pay the price, too. The cycle goes on, until the
next fad slithers in.
Why? Something to keep in mind about the shaman is that
when this word was introduced to the English language, it brought
another word with it. Sham. A sham artist is one that can trick
you into believing whatever he or she wants you to believe. Even
if it is tricking you into believing that your sickness is cured. The
shamanic wonder workers of the world are putting too much
emphasis on the journey and forgetting about the purpose. They
are spending all their time beating drums and talking about seeing
eagle, wolves and bears. They love to talk to other shamans about
how the Native American had the right idea when it came to liv-
ing as one with his or her environment. About how all things are
related and something has got to be done before it's too late. And,
of course, how the "journey" went this last weekend. Then after
the meeting they get into their respective cars, drive home to their
families, watch a little TV and go to bed.

UFO Investigation Class Pt. I, October 3
Our investigation classes will continue with a series of
classes on UFOs. Because of the complexity of UFO reports,
three separate classes will be presented to cover the topic. Part I
will deal with interviewing people who report or witness sight-
ings. Part II, will deal with physical evidence and will include a
outdoor training session; and Part III, will cover interviewing
contactees and abductees.
Part I will be held on October 3, from 10:15 am to 4:00 pm
at The Way Home Music and Books, 3231 So. 13th, in Lincoln. It
is open to all Fortean Research Center members, but because
space is limited those wishing to attend will be required to pre-
register at The Way Home or by calling Steve Johnson at (402)
[AD] 435-8941 no later than October 1.
There is no charge for the class, but all those attending are
required to have a MUFON Field Investigator's Manual, available
at The Way Home. Participants should bring a folding chair,
pen/pencil and notebook.
Members interested in investigating reports of UFO sight-
ings, ghost activity, and miscellaneous paranormal events are
urged to attend the FRC series of investigation classes. It is from
this pool of participants that investigations of reports received by
the FRC are assigned.

Bentwaters UFO Incident In the forest between the U.S.
airbases of Bentwaters and Woodbridge in England, a security patrol encountered an ob-
ject on the ground which they then followed through the trees for three hours one night in
December 1980. The next morning, physical traces were found, and that night a com-
plicated series of UFO events lasting six hours were witnessed by a number of other
servicemen on and off the base, including the Deputy Base Commander. These were the
subject of a CNN series and a recent Unsolved Mysteries story. We hope to have some of
the witnesses present, though nothing has been confirmed as yet. Jenny Randles is the
British UFO Research Associations director of investigations, and the author of many
books, including From Out of the Blue. Ray Boeche is a principal U.S. investigator.

Ghosts of the Air One of the nations leading author's in aviation and
astronautics, Martin Caidin 's books have been used as doctrine and strategy guides and
textbooks by the National War College, the Air University of the U.S. Air Force, and other
institutions. He has been cited repeatedly by NASA, the U.S. Air Force and Navy for his
work in many fields. His 140 books include Samurai!, Black Thursday, Zero!, The Night
Hamburg Died, and Ghosts of the Air. He has collected first-hand stories from pilots and
official records of the USAF, RAF, and the Luftwaffe involving haunted airfields and
planes, crewless aircraft landing, "shifts in time," mysterious warning voices, WWI
aircraft appearing in WWII battles, and less easily classifiable cases. He is also doing
research into psychokinetic effects, and will give a demonstration of his experiments.

UFOs followed a regular nightly schedule over the town, animals were found mutilated, people received strange visitors and phone

Ten Ways You Can Help The UFO Cover-Up
Continue, Part One
1) First but foremost, don't talk about the subject!
If you're hunched over the coffee pot at work and your co-
worker asks if you watched the UFO special on TV the previous
night, plead ignorance and say you were watching the Gilligan's
Island re-runs. If you are forced to make a statement, say some-
thing like: "Well, some say there may be something to this stuff,
but I don't know..." Kind of roll your eyes back in your head and
laugh nervously. But don't say any more, because if you do,
someone else might get the idea that you believe! (To "believe" is
a fate worse than being caught in a time warp dancing cheek-to-
cheek with Richard Nixon on top of the big desk in the Oval
Office with all your friends watching and laughing hysterically
and knowing that it's true-Dick is a good dancer.)
2) Don't join any organizations that purport to be actively
studying the UFO mystery.
If they dare to suggest that there may be a reality in the
thousands of worldwide reports from pilots, housewives, retail
clerks, farmers, psychologists, doctors, the young and the old, just
drop 'em flat. Don't contribute any money and heavens don't
give 'em any of your time. 99% of all the organizations investi-
gating UFOs depend totally on member support. No members, no
support. It's simple. Don't give 'em anything and they can't
exist. If they don't exist, we've won. There won't be anyone to
challenge the "party line" (see #3). Better yet, if you gotta join
something and the bowling league is filled, join CSICOP. You
can surround yourself with such good people as Phillip Klass,
who rarely has to interview a witness before making a pro-

believing the "party line"...you know which party line I'm talk-
ing about, don't you? Stand up a while you read this aloud, with
your hand held over your heart and your eyes suitable glazed over
(any impression of Marlin Fitzwater will do) the following
official line:
"There are no such things as UFOs and anyone reporting a UFO is
a crackpot, weirdo, commie-loving liberal pervert alcoholic drug
taking schizophrenic wacko Perot believer."
4) Never, I repeat, never ask anybody important (anybody
important is someone that pays good money to have their
shirts professionally laundered) questions in public about the
UFO subject.
Especially politicians, or more importantly, politicians that
you helped get elected by not voting for the other folks. Always
ask 'em really deep questions like "Are you going to raise taxes?"
If we can just keep the UFO questions out of the public arena, we
have won the game. By not telling your elected representatives
your concerns or asking them about UFOs, you'll never endanger
yourself or them with violating the "party line." Of course if
you're with me here you really don't have any concerns anyhow.
Any questions here, see #3 above. Don't elect anyone who is a
"free thinker." Keep electing the folks who will listen to reason
(the "party line"). Keep the professional politicians going back
into office year after year, 'cause it's the way it's always been. At
least it's worked for the last 50 years.

about the UFO subject, point your finger at 'em and burst out

would just mess up his facts. Don't worry, we have suitable
patriots infiltrating most of the UFO groups and we won't let 'em
get too far spreading their swill about alien abductions of our
children and the like.
3) Don't read any books or magazines that cover UFOs.
Don't encourage people around you to read 'em either,
because if you can keep 'em dumb and stupid, they'll go on
Articles Of Interest
"Aliens in the Basement" by Frank Kuznik
Air & Space (Smithsonian), August/September 1992
The author tours Wright-Patterson, asking about the
remains of the Roswell crash. Not surprisingly--and I think quite
reasonably-the people there preferred to talk about the research
projects they're actually involved with. Obviously a not entirely
serious article, but respectful towards the Roswell research
(Kuznik hoped to participate in the archeological dig being
planned at the alleged crash site). Fairly humorous and interest-
ing for the glimpses of how people working at the base view the

For those that aren't already aware of it, there is no Hanger

keep alien bodies in any case.) A Building 18 formerly contained
"cold cells" which were used to test engines in Arctic condi-

myth which hasn't much bearing on the Roswell incident itself.

marked "stuffed toy animals, condition poor" and sent to a surplus
property warehouse. (I would've thought it more likely they were
placed in the warehouse with the Ark of the Covenant...or in
Pentagon-speak, the "Superconducting Hebraic Archival Unit.")
He concluded: "If you think I my story is implausible, you should
visit the surplus property warehouse at Wright-Patterson and ask
the staff how to bid for surplus items. You might even find used
flying saucer parts, but they won't be accurately identified in the
catalog."
"The big red hen and the Devil's Hoofprints" by Bailey White
Smithsonian, October 1992
A short and probably true story about a childhood visit to a
well known Fortean spot. Twelve six-inch deep depressions, the
size of dinnerplates, which supposedly have been impossible to
fill in since their 1813 appearance near Bath, North Carolina.
Chickens are supposed to refuse to eat from them, and the authors'
aunt organized a test. I believe the subject was covered in more
detail in Jim Brandon's Weird America, but I was unable to check
a copy before press time.
From The Editors
Our apologies for the lateness of the issue, due to the
change in editors. As you can imagine, setting up the transition
teams, renting office space and equipment, and bringing in their
families was a significant logistical challenge.
If it seems your issues are taking a long time to arrive, it's
because they're being mailed bulk rate. It takes something like a
week for members in Lincoln to get their copies (sometimes
longer), while for one member living just outside Lincoln it takes
about a month. To compensate for this, the newsletter will now

popular among cancer researchers for use in experiments. They
were unusually hardy, able to survive spills as well as take over-

time (causing problems for researchers who thought they were
studying something else). Deliberately and otherwise, they've
spread around the world, and are now know as HeLa cells.
However, researchers writing in the journal Evolutionary

sidered a new species. They contend that they have evolved
separately from humans (with different strains in different
places), and behave "just like" a single celled microbial species.
The researchers disagree on what taxonomic category to put them

A Message from the
Director
Greetings to all my fellow Forteans!
I am very honored to announce that the
Fortean Research Center's Board of
Directors has elected me to fill the position
of Director. I look forward to serving the
Board and the membership in this capacity,
and in helping guide the Center toward
continued growth and success. I know I can
count on your help in making this a stronger,
more vital organization--indeed, the only
way we can continue to improve is by
principally on UFOs, animal mutilations,
covert government involvement in the
paranormal, the Men in Black phenomena,
and cultic and occultic religious movements.
I'm currently at work on the first
book-length, scholarly study of the Men in
Black.
But enough about me--let's talk about us.
Where do we go from here? I am keenly
interested in your ideas and suggestions--
after all, this is your organization. I hope to
diversify our scope of investigations, offer
training classes for those interested in
performing field investigations, and

working together.
For those not familiar with my background,
let me give a brief summary.
I have been involved in investigating the
unexplained for almost thirty years now. I
have worked with various organizations in
many capacities, including a several-year
stint as MUFON State Director for
Nebraska. I have worked at various times
with organizations such as APRO (Aerial
Phenomena Research Organization), NICAP
(National Investigations Committee for
Aerial Phenomena), INFO (International
Fortean Organization), and many, many
others. In 1981, I co-founded the
Pennsylvania Association for the Study of
the Unexplained, along with Stan Gordon,
and then, in 1982, established the Fortean
Research Center here in Lincoln, serving as
Director until 1988, when I resigned and the
job fell to Scott Colborn's very capable
hands.
I'm employed as an illustrator and book
designer for the University of Nebraska
Press, and hold a B.A. in Art and Education,
and a Master's (Th.M) in theology.
My personal research has concentrated

quarterly appearance in your mailbox.
We find ourselves in something of a
financial crunch at this time, and we can, to
be quite frank, use your financial support.
Any contributions would be gratefully
accepted, and remember, we are a
tax-exempt, charitable organization.
As a fund-raising event, we will be having a
pot luck dinner and benefit concert
scheduled for the 47th anniversary of
Kenneth Arnold's famous sighting--June 24
at the Bethany Park Pavilion. Scott Colborn
and I will both make brief presentations, and
we will be treated to a concert by Dennis
Taylor, one of the finest guitarists you'll
ever have the privilege to hear. The cost will
be $5.00, and remember to bring your

a great time of food, friendship, and fine
music. Check elsewhere in the Newsletter
for complete details.

Finally, many thanks to Scott Colborn and
the Board of Directors--Steve Johnson, Ed
Rumbaugh, Lee Debus, Lon Nancel, and
Frank Dreier--for their fine work in running
one of the best research organizations in the
country. Let's continue to pull together to
make the Fortean Research Center even
better in the days to come.
Sincerely,
Ray W. Boeche
A Note from Scott
The purpose of this statement is to inform
you of my decision to resign as Director of
the Fortean Research Center (FRC) and as
President of the Board of Directors of the
FRC, effective May 30, 1994. The decision
was not an easy one to reach; however, in
talking with my wife, Kathryn, regarding the
upcoming birth of our first baby, and
weighing the increasing commitment asked
of me by the growth of our bookstore, I feel
that this decision is for the best.
I have been honored to serve as Director and
President of the Board since 1988 Our
It is my intention to keep active in areas of
anomalous phenomena research such as
Close Encounters and Parapsychology,
although at a reduced level. I will continue
to host the weekly radio program "Exploring
Unexplained Phenomena" Saturday
mornings from 10:00-11:30 a.m. on KZUM,
89.3 FM. Additionally, I will carry on in the
Close Encounters support group that was
formed in 1988 and continues to meet
monthly in Lincoln. Also, it is my hope that
I can contribute articles from time to time
for publication in the Journal and the
Newsletter.
The "information highways" continue to get
more and more cluttered with "noise." It has
been, and I hope will continue to be, an
aspiration of our Center to help its members
separate the "wheat from the chaff," so to
speak. The FRC is one of the only
organizations around that encourages you to
take a broad perspective when looking at
unexplained phenomena, so as to not miss
the inter-relationships that may exist
between fields of research. By not closing
down to any given area, you may find
material in one area of research that helps
you understand and make sense of another
discipline or area of interest. This

the FRC has shown steady improvement,
and the periodic speakers and yearly
conferences that our Center has offered to
our membership and to the public have
helped inform many people as to the various
aspects of the paranormal. The Center is
poised for further growth, and it is my hope
that you will continue to support the efforts
of the Fortean Research Center--
philosophically, spiritually, and financially.
The Board of Directors, during a meeting in
May 1994, considered several candidates for
the position of Director, and during a second
meeting elected Raymond Boeche, founder
and former Director, to the Directorship
position once again. Ray has agreed to
serve and brings with him over 25
years of
active research into the unexplained. If you
were to talk with individuals in the fields of
Ufology, Cryptozoology, Parapsychology
and other fields of research and inquiry that
comprise unexplained phenomena research
and if you were to ask them to come up with
a "short list" of the people they most respect,
Ray's name would be on many of the lists.
He is well-qualified, a friend of mine, and I
ask that you support him in his efforts as
Director.
philosophy has and can continue to serve
our Center and its members well.
The Fortean Research Center can and will
continue to serve its members and help
inform the public only with your support.
I've given the Center six years, and now it's
time for many of you to step forward and
make your contribution of time and money.
If you have an interest in becoming more
involved in the Center and its activities
beyond a subscriber, please let the Center
know of your interest. You may wish to
write the Center and let us know of your
talents, abilities, and ways that you believe
that you could help the Center.
Your financial support is critical for the
Center to continue its efforts, and I ask each
of you to consider making a tax-deductible
donation to the FRC at this time. Perhaps
you can't volunteer time or effort, but please
consider making a financial donation to the
FRC. It may or may not help soothe your
conscience, but it sure can't hurt to ask!
Make a financial donation and help the
Center.
In closing, let me just say that I've enjoyed
tremendously the friendships I've
established with many of you. I feel I've

[PAGE BREAK]

grown as the result of my interactions with
you and through my attempts to serve you as
Director of the FRC. I look forward to
seeing many of you at our yearly
conferences and single-speaker events, and
I'll close with a line taken from Bob Hope:
"Thanks for the memories!"
Sincerely,
Scott H. Colborn

LOYD AUERBACH
Loyd Auerbach has been investigating cases of reported paranormal phe-
nomena and helping people understand what may (or may not) be going
on in their lives for over 12 years. In 1989 he founded the Office of
Paranormal Investigations, a central place for people to call when they
believe they have a psychic or paranormal disturbance, and a resource
center for Media, business, scientists, law enforcement, and attorneys.
He has been teaching Parapsychology and related topics for several
years in the San Francisco Bay area, and previously in New York. He is
an adjunct professor teaching Parapsychology at John F. Kennedy Uni-
versity in Orinda, California, and has taught courses in anthropology,
"mysteries" in science and the so-called "unexplained". Science Fiction.
Magic, and Media. He holds a B.A. in Cultural Anthropology from
Northwestern University (1978) and an M.S. in Parapsychology from
John F. Kennedy University (1981).
Mr. Auerbach is past President of the California Society for Psychi-cal
Study and a member of the American Society for Psychical Research
(ASPR), an associate member of the Parapsychological Association, and
a corresponding member of the Society for Scientific Exploration.
In 1984, he was called in as an Expert Witness in a San Francisco
homicide trial, his testimony dealing with psychic phenomena and the
anthropology of belief in the supernatural, and has consulted with other
attorneys since then.
Very interested in and concerned with media portrayals of Parapsy-
chology, he was Public Information and Media Consultant to the ASPR
in New York, and has been a consultant to various television producers
and writers in the United States, Japan and Great Britain, providing both
scientific and creative input. Most recently, he has been a consultant for
the FOX Television Network's Sightings, and been featured on the show.
He was also featured on four Japanese television specials in 1991-92, and
MARTIN-CAIDIN
Martin Caidin is recognized internationally as an authority in science,
aviation, astronautics, crime, oceanographic and the military in non-fic-
tion and fiction alike. He has worked, flown with, and written about
Japanese, Russian. German and other pilots, as well as combat and
science leaders in areas of military and air war history and contemporary
technology. He is a flight chaplain, FAA examiner, a deputy sheriff, an
undercover agent, a news reporter and broadcaster, racecar driver, teac-
her and is involved in many other professional activities. After a stint as
a merchant seaman in Europe and Africa, he spent several years in the
U S. and in Asia in the Air Force in Intelligence and special assignments.
He was the official historian for the Fifth Air Force (among others)
during his stint with A-2 (intelligence) in Japan.
He has had some 140 books published, and has been translated into
dozens of foreign languages throughout the world with sales in the tens
of millions of copies. Many of his books, such as Samurai! and Zero!,
have been active sellers for nearly thirty years through multiple hardco-
ver and paperback editions in several dozen languages. The National
War College, the Air University of the U.S. Air Force, and many other
educational, training, and special institutions have used his books as
doctrine and strategy guides, historical references, and textbooks.
Mr. Caidin is famous as a pilot and restorer of warplanes, as well as for
his performances at leading airshow events. He has flown bombers to
Europe and throughout different countries, and as a stunt and combat
pilot in different types of aircraft for numerous motion pictures. In 1960
he was the only civilian ever to live with and fly as a member of the
famed USAF Thunderbirds jet aerobatic team. He is a Charter Member
and for many years was on the Board of Nominations for the U.S.
Congress-established Aviation Hall of Fame.
In 1955 he worked secretly with Dr. Wernher von Braun and a small
research group at Cape Canaveral to build the nation's first top-secret
moon rocket. He continues a close association with many astronauts and
is involved in preparing a fifth for Tokyo Broadcasting System. He
recently filmed the pilot for a new TV series. Haunted America,
coincidentally featuring Martin Caidin.
He is an accomplished comedy magician and mentalist, having per-
formed in comedy clubs and restaurants, on stage, and for corporations.
His knowledge and interest in magic began while he was a student at
JFKU. in a course designed to introduce the would-be researcher to the
methods of the phoney psychic. Mr.. Auerbach has taught that course
when offered since 1984. He was 1989 President of Assembly #112 of
the society of American magicians, the first parapsychologist to have
actively served as an officer of both a psychical research group and
magicians organization. He is a member of the Society of American
Magicians national Occult Investigation Committee. He received a cre-
dit as a "Creative Consultant" to the Magic of David Copperfield X: The
Bermuda Triangle (CBS, March 1988).
His work as a Mentalist has expanded since late 1991 to include a new
version of an old idea. A new form of what has been called "spirit thea-
ter," entertainment in the vein of the spiritualist seances of the late
19th/early 20th centuries is now being presented by Auerbach and men-
talist-partner Larry Loebig as Seance Fiction Theater.
ESP, Hauntings, and Poltergeists: A Parapsychologists Handbook
(Warner Books, 1986), his first book, has sold over fifty thousand copies.
His second, Psychic Dreaming (Warner Books, 1991) was the subject of
a presentation at our 1992 conference where he also demonstrated stage
magic and mentalism. His third and newest book is Reincarnation,
Channeling and Possession: A Parapsychologist's Handbook. He has
been a consulting editor of FATE magazine since the beginning of 1991.

on parapsychology and psychic phenomena.

development centers. He founded the American Astronautical Society.

also became a major factor in American-Soviet scientific relations. The
U.S. Government through the Academy of Science stated that without it.
there likely would never have been the Apollo-Soyuz mission. In a rare
move, NASA officially recommended the book on the basis of its detail
and strict scientific and factual accuracy throughout. His novel Cyborg
was the basis for the TVseries The Six Million Dollar Man.
He has been active with the Air Commandos and Strike Command in
research with paramilitary strike teams; his police and crime work have
been considered as on "both sides of the fence," since he has been
involved in secret operations in paramilitary programs.
Mr. Caidin served as nuclear warfare specialist for several states in
preparing detailed analyses of the effects of mass-destruction weapons
against metropolitan target complexes. Much of his work remains stan-
dard reference and instructional material, and his studies of such effects
as firestorms are classics in their fields. The U.S. Government has rep-
rinted his materials widely for transportation in many nations throughout
the world, including the U.S.S.R.
He has been the Consultant to the commander of the Air Force Missile
Test Center; Consultant to the Air Surgeon, FAA; and continues to work
closely with scientific, military, security, intelligence, teaching and civi-
lian agencies. He has often been retained by industry, government.
Hollywood and leading political figures for advice and direction on
scientific, military, cultural, and "into the future" analyses.
When last in Lincoln he presented material from his book Ghosts of
the Air, and gave what many would say was a successful demonstration
in psychokinesis (the mental influencing of an object without physical
contact). He is a contributing editor for FATE magazine

From The Director
Was The CIA At The Conference?
Rumor has it that at least one individual at the Exploring
Unexplained Phenomena V conference-April 30th to May 2nd,
1993, in Lincoln, NE-told one or more persons that they were an
agent working for the CIA. What was to be gained by this dis-
closure is not immediately known to this author. I have it from a
fairly reliable source that the above did take place. The names of
the individual(s) allegedly making the statement about working
for the CIA are known to me, as well as the name of at least one of
the people who was approached. The source has asked me not to
disclose names at this time, and I will honor this request.
Anyone can make a statement that they work for the CIA.
At the 4th Unexplained Phenomena conference held in Lincoln in
1992, a man approached Stephen Johnson, the Assistant Director
of the Fortean Research Center. The man told Stephen that he
was working for an agency, and had some information to pass
along. So, Stephen and I arranged a meeting that included Linda
Moulton Howe (a speaker at that conference), the man, and Ste-
phen and I. Very quickly we learned that the man making the
statement was not a balanced, healthy person. In fact he needed
professional psychological help, in my opinion. He offered no
credentials that impressed us, and sort of raved about things in
general. Since I brought up Linda Howe's name, I'll tell that
you
she is not the individual who the source referred to as having
made statements of CIA ties.
What makes the current allegations interesting is that the
person(s) with the alleged ties to the CIA are not "just anybody."
Prior to the start of the recent Lincoln conference, I had heard
rumors of the individual(s) in question as being (a) agent(s) for
the CIA from two different sources. In a phone conversation with
the individual(s) in question prior to the conference, the "rumor"
about CIA ties was brought up by the individual(s), and kind of
laughed off as being silly and ridiculous. I put the rumors in a sort
of "questionable" file that I keep stuff like this in, and went on
with conference preparation (indeed, I suspect that rumors about
the character of people in UFO research keep many publications
going). Is this whole thing a big deal, or not? Let's put on our
by Scott Colborn
collective thinking caps for a minute or two and think about this.
If an intelligence agency was interested in information and
current thinking regarding the UFO phenomenon from "civi-
lians," said agency would probably find it within their budget to
either have someone go to an occasional conference, or, the
agency would simply purchase audio or video tapes of the event.
Most UFO conferences in this country record the event on VHS
tape, and for a price you can own copies of the conference video
tape. Anyone, including an intelligence agency, can purchase
these tapes (although I'm not aware of any conference committee
that has received a request and payment directly from an intelli-
gence agency). The intelligence agencies have probably gotten
tapes, somehow. I accept this as a "given." So why would an
agency want a representative physically at a conference, when a
tape or two could be purchased.
At UFO conferences some of the most interesting infor-
mation is heard outside of the conference auditorium. Face-to-
face conversations over a meal, or perhaps in a hall. Stories of a
first-person nature. To glean this information you'd need to
physically have someone there. To engage in direct conversation
with people, and ask questions. Video tape can't ask questions.
You'd need someone there at the conference if you wanted
to set up a network for information gathering purposes of indivi-
duals who would volunteer to help and provide information from
time to time. Maybe this is part of it. Of course, I may just be
"fishing" here, and have missed the mark. Maybe the person(s)
alleged to have made the CIA reference did it for a lark, or did it to
hoax someone. Maybe they decided to put the word out there, and
see how long it takes to come back to them. Maybe you can
"clue" me in. What do you think? Why would someone come to
the Lincoln conference and tell one or more individuals that they
worked for the CIA? And is it a "big deal" to you if they did?
As far as I'm concerned, if the allegations are true, it leaves
me feeling "used." I'm a little angry that possibly people at the
Lincoln '93 conference chose to sneak around behind our backs.
I'm miffed that they laughed off the "rumors" and then proceeded
to embellish on it at our expense. Of course, I am taking the
source for this whole thing at his/her word, in effect that he/she

[PAGE BREAK]

was approached and the CIA relationship was laid out.
If the allegations are true, am I asking for or expecting too
much to have wished that they would have said right up front,
"Look, I'm also working with the CIA in terms of
and
I'd like to come to your conference and hang out. Ok with you
and your organization?"
If the allegations are true, maybe we should have a table at
next years conference marked "CIA," and legitimize their pre-
sence. On some college campuses there is a career week during
which the agency hangs out a shingle and talks to prospective in-
dividuals about the CIA as a career field. But of course the CIA
isn't concerned with the reality or perceived reality of their pre-
sence on college campuses, and they probably are with regards to
UFO conferences. I mean, if the CIA did man a table at next
year's conference, would it say to people that "we're interested in
a field that officially is not recognized as being a field to be pub-
licly interested in?" So are they sort of forced to employ people to
sneak around and tell lies and half-truths to keep the appropriate
distance from the UFO field in public? Well, if the allegations are
true, the agency better have a talk with some of their "loose can-
nons." because they blew it in Lincoln. Oh, by the way. This
whole CIA thing has nothing to do with the "man-in-black"
appearance at the conference. Read on.
The "Man-In-Black" Appearance
That's right, we had a M.I.B. at the conference (well, sort
of). Lon Nansel, one of our members, decided to dress up as a
M.I.B. Lon, looking the height of M.I.B. fashion, walked into the
conference auditorium just as Ray Boeche was to present his
paper on the M.I.B. phenomenon. As Ray took the podium to
begin delivering his paper, Lon walked "herky-jerky" fashion
down to the front of the audience, turned around, stared at
members of the audience, took a note pad from his pocket a
began writing in it. He looked great! His attire consisted of black
wrap-around sunglasses, a wire running from an ear piece down
into the shirt collar of his white shirt, and black tie and black suit
(I think you got your $20 out of the suit, Lon). Lon said he had
used some talcum powder on his face to really get a "pasty" look.
After having gotten Ray's and the audiences attention, he sat
down for several minutes in the audience, and then walked out of
the auditorium. We got some really great pictures of him in the
lobby, and standing in the elevator in the lobby with the doors
opening and closing repeatedly.
Later that same night we had a great Valentino's buffet
dinner, and Lon walked in late. Of course he had changed clothes,
removed the talcum, and for all intents and purposes looked like a
"regular guy. After having gone through the buffet line, Lon
found a place to sit at a table with three other people also attend-
ing the conference. During dinner, the people asked Lon if he had
seen the "man-in-black" who had tried to disrupt the morning talk
by Ray Boeche. Lon did all he could do to maintain a straight face
as they told him about the M.I.B. They didn't get it! They
actually thought it was for real.
So, to set the record straight, there was no "real" M.I.B.
appearance in Lincoln at the '93 conference (at least that we are
aware of), although given the previous story we're sure that the
legend has started. I'll let you know in the future when we get
requests for info on the M.I.B. appearance. Thanks for the laughs,
Lon! And, thanks to all you folks who attended and made this last
conference our best yet.
Now for some more interesting events we've got planned
for you!
